Strategic Social Investment (SSI)

Our long-term commitment to social development is driven by prudent business sustainability practices and reinforced by our corporate values.
The Group commits up to 1% of profit after tax annually for investment into programmes where real needs exist in health, education and other sectors.

Letshego Group Strategic Social Investment Objectives

Letshego’s approach to Strategic Social Investment (SSI) is that we must achieve a pragmatic balance between meeting the society’s developmental needs while deriving strategic business value. We have embraced a variety of socially responsible business practices. We drive a commitment towards pro-active investment in the social development needs of our countries of operation.

Our SSI objectives are to:
  • make a relevant and notable contribution to the low and middle-income communities’ social development in the areas of education, healthcare (with a specific focus on non-communicable diseases) and livelihood improvement;
  • deliver value to communities in conjunction with our key strategic partners, and in alignment with our strategy;
  • ensure the programmes are designed to achieve widespread impact of scale in the community (not restricted to a small number of beneficiaries);
  • engage with our stakeholders to create a shared social conscience and social licence to operate;
  • Achieve meaningful outcomes that are instrumental in the upliftment of the poor and disadvantaged in Africa.

Education

Letshego’s main focus within the education agenda will be a financial education programme for staff and Group-wide campaigns to address financial literacy and skills deepening for customers and the general public. This will include providing support initiatives to improve financial skills of adolescent and adult learners as well as customers across multiple platforms for engagement – from face-to-face to purely digital interventions.
In Botswana, Letshego Financial Services Botswana has embarked on a 3-year financial literacy campaign. This is in collaboration with, and under the auspices of, the Republic of Botswana’s Directorate of Public Service Management.
In Uganda, Letshego has trained central and local government employees in rural areas on financial management.
In Tanzania, we train both our customers as well as minority and / or disadvantaged groups on financial management.

Health

At Letshego, we recognise that health is crucial to a generation’s productivity and their ability to live a full life. We dedicate our social investment funds towards increasing awareness of personal health management. This is a cornerstone of our philosophy and, as such, we extend this awareness building from our own Letshego team outwards.
In addition to in-country staff and public welfare drives, Letshego has also committed over two thirds of the annual social investment budget towards a strategic, multi-year and Group-wide project addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We have named this project “LetsCare”. For more on LetsCare, please visit this link.

Livelihood Creation or Employment

Letshego’s support or investment will mainly be in entrepreneurial skills development and mentorship programmes. These should contribute to positioning Letshego as a leader in socio-economic development, and as an innovator of financial skills-deepening in challenging markets.
Finally, we recognise that we are not social development experts. Letshego will therefore outsource SSI involvement, via the mechanism of financial and / or in-kind grant making, to organisations with credible social development and governance track records. In such instances our holding company, and / or our subsidiaries, ensure regular, accurate and transparent feedback reporting by beneficiaries of such grants.
Where situations permit, Letshego will partner with other stakeholders on global issues that impact its business as a corporate citizen.
